Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs), also known as phakic intraocular lenses, are a type of refractive surgery used to correct moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness), as well as astigmatism in some cases. Unlike LASIK or PRK, which reshape the cornea, ICL surgery involves implanting a thin, prescription lens between the iris and the natural lens of the eye. This lens works with the eye’s natural focusing system to correct vision without altering the cornea’s shape. ICLs are especially beneficial for patients with thin corneas or high refractive errors who may not be suitable candidates for other types of refractive surgery.
